First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at USLI.
Underwriting Assistant
The process was long and inefficient. It started with a phone interview, followed by 3 separate 30-minute interviews back to back. All interviewers asked the same questions, making me repeat myself. They focused on my resume rather than personal aspects, despite valuing 'people and fit'. It felt like a single interview with all 3 managers would have been more efficient. The managers were dry and robotic. Moving to the next round involves 3 more similar meetings. It's a lot of steps for an entry-level job.

Underwriter
It started with a laid-back phone chat with the hiring manager, giving me a feel for the job and them a feel for me. After that, there were several one-on-one video calls with different folks. Some interviews were super structured with specific questions, while others felt more like casual conversations, just depending on who I was talking to. Then I had to do a caliper assessment. Following that, there were more one-on-one interviews with people at a higher level, which also gave me a chance to ask my own questions. Finally, they requested three references, and I got confirmation they were all contacted by USLI. The job offer came after that. I really liked the job itself and the training they offered, and the benefits were decent. Interestingly, I had another offer at the same time with a bit more pay and the option to work remotely. For a few other reasons too, I ended up choosing the other job. It wasn't an easy choice.

Expect a long and tough interview process. I had at least 8 interviews before I withdrew my application and accepted another position. They really care about finding someone who fits their culture and want to ensure you'll get along with the company. Everyone, from the receptionist to the CIO, is aligned with the company's mission, and they want to see if you are too. While I get what they're doing with the interview process, they should know that the time commitment they're asking for is tough, especially if you're already working full-time. They also make you complete an online assessment with questions about your personality and logic.

Underwriting Assistant Trainee
The whole process felt like a huge waste of time. It started with a 2-hour test that didn't seem related to the job at all. Then there was a phone screen, followed by a back-to-back interview with about six people, which required me to take a day off. The final stage involved another test and interviews with four more people. Even though I felt the interviews went well and I connected with everyone, I didn't get the job. They called to inform me but didn't offer an apology for the time spent or explain why I was rejected, especially since I thought things were going well. While I'm not entitled to feedback, some would have been appreciated. It's also concerning that they don't have an HR department, which I now see as a major red flag. Looking back, I suspect I didn't get the job because I didn't fit their perceived physical/racial mold.
