First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at US Food Safety and Inspection Service.
Investigator
The interview process was quite informal. It was conducted over the phone initially, without meeting me in person, partly because the hiring manager is located in a different state. After receiving the job offer, I had to specifically ask for my manager to come and meet me.
- What knowledge do you have regarding investigation techniques?
- Are you familiar with interviewing people and establishing rapport?
- Would you be comfortable with travel requirements for the role?
Food Inspector
I put in my application on the web and then after a while, they reached out to set up a phone chat with the people in charge. There were three managers on the panel who work out in the field and would be my bosses if I got the job. When the time came the next day, they called me and after we said hello, the interview kicked off. Each person on the panel asked a question.
- Can you share an instance where you faced a conflict and how you managed it?
- What competencies do you have that make you the most suitable applicant for this role?
- What motivates your interest in a public service job?
Program Analyst
I applied through usajobs and got an email to schedule an interview with a panel. After that, I interviewed with the panel. Then I got an email from the director to schedule another interview over the phone. I had two more calls after that. There was no testing, and they didn't even finish my background investigation until 8 months after I started.
- Tell me about a time you experienced stress and how you handled it.
- Describe your methods for prioritizing tasks when under pressure.
Contract Specialist
I talked with the Branch Chief and her Deputy. They asked me some questions about my background in Contracts, covering both my Federal Government and Private Sector experience.
- Can you explain your role and its purpose?
- What's your experience been like in Contracts, both with the Federal Government and in the Private Sector?
