The process is really detailed. It includes a drug test, background check, credit check, and employment verification. There are also questions about security clearance. Admin helped set up the interview. Didn't see any updates on the job site about referrals or the interview. It was a 30-minute phone interview. We started with introductions for about 5 minutes, then spent 20 minutes on technical questions, and finished with 5 minutes for exit. The panel was friendly on the phone. The technical questions were about UNIX, networking, and Windows. They weren't too hard, and I could have searched for the answers, but they kept asking. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to look up the answers or say I didn't know. They also asked one strength/weakness question. The job description didn't match the interview at all. There seemed to be a disconnect between the hiring department and HR. I don't expect an offer, but due to clearance requirements, it could take 3-9 months between the interview and getting the job.

So, I got referred in, which really helped bypass the initial HR screening for the resume and KSAs. These KSAs were pretty intense, asking to connect past experience to things like budgeting, program management, and IT stuff. After that, I had a panel interview over the phone with some GS-14/15s, who are pretty high up but not SES level. The job I was going for was a GS-14, basically a mid-level manager or Director in the private sector. The interview panel asked questions directly from the job description, which is super rigid in government hiring – everyone gets asked the exact same questions to keep it fair. After the interview, the waiting game began because of all the government HR red tape and staffing issues. It took weeks to get the call, and then the security clearance added another 2-3 months. DHS is still kind of new and combines different agencies, so there's some political jockeying for budget control.
