The interview had a few rounds of tough questions about managing a scientific program. The questions felt appropriate for a high-stakes role. They confirmed they ask everyone the same questions to avoid bias, which I appreciated.

This interview was with two senior managers from the U.S. Department of Energy. They were nice. It seemed like they had a set list of questions they had to ask everyone, probably so they could compare candidates fairly. One of the managers seemed to be reading the questions right off of a list.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • What is your typical program budget expenditure?
  • Describe how you would discipline an employee who isn't meeting performance expectations.
  • What are the most critical priorities within the program area?

The DOE application process is quite cumbersome. I had to submit my resume online, then navigate to the DOE website to answer many pages of questions, which resulted in a 6-page Word document. Initially, HR screened me out as not qualified. I contacted HR to inquire about the specific qualification I was missing, as I felt I had met all requirements. HR reviewed my application again and deemed me qualified, forwarding my resume to the hiring official. A lesson learned is to not hesitate to contact HR if things aren't going as expected. I then had a phone interview, which was my first interview and went okay. I thought I had better than even chances of an offer, but none came. This was likely due to my lack of energy policy experience and a perceived lack of synergy with one of the interviewers. I would have much preferred a face-to-face interview.
