First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Upwork.
Product Manager
The interview process involves a recruiter call, followed by an interview with the hiring manager. Then, there's an onsite round with team members, and finally, a last round with senior leaders. The recruiter, Kari, was great and kept me informed about what to expect and passed on feedback.
- It was mostly behavioral questions.
- There were some product scenario questions, like what would you do to improve this product area, related to the role.
- There was also an analytical case question during the onsite round.
Product Manager
I had a phone screen with the hiring manager, then a homework assignment. After submitting the homework, I was invited for an on-site interview with four people from different levels in product management. I then had another on-site interview. I heard back after the first on-site and was invited for some time with executives. I think I did pretty well in all my in-person interviews. I tried reaching out to the recruiter 3-4 times but got no response. I ended up calling them directly and they seemed surprised. Shortly after, another recruiter emailed saying the position was filled. I'm not sure if I was a backup or if they're just bad at communication. Even though this company seems like a great place to work, their recruiting process needs improvement. Not responding for two months is unacceptable.
- Questions were specific to the role and assumed familiarity with their products and platform.
Senior Product Manager
I applied for a Senior PM role focused on international payments and heard back from a recruiter. After an initial chat, the interview process began. I ended up speaking with 3 people and the Hiring Manager, totaling 4 conversations. Typically, the Hiring Manager interview comes first, followed by a panel, but due to the HM's schedule, I met with two interviewers first, then the HM, and finally one more person. The interviews were straightforward and the people were friendly. I felt my domain expertise exceeded that of the interviewers. Despite believing I performed well in all four discussions, I was ultimately rejected and received no feedback, which I found unprofessional given the time invested. The team seemed good, but the lack of response and the team's early stage impacted my overall impression.
