First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Upstart.
Analyst
The interview process was quite extensive, starting with a recruiter call, then a hiring manager discussion, followed by SQL and product sense interviews. After that, there was a take-home assignment, a random interview, a cross-functional (XFN) interview, a presentation, another meeting with the final hiring manager, and finally, an interview with the VP of Analytics. This felt like a lot, especially considering that top-tier companies sometimes have less involved processes. One of the interviewers was incredibly belligerent, which led me to withdraw from the process. They were extremely disrespectful and seemed to have a chip on their shoulder, trying to prove me wrong. I've encountered much smarter individuals who were far more pleasant. I don't plan on interviewing there again. It ended up taking close to 10+ hours with the take-home and other interview stages.

The process included a recruiter screen, a chat with the hiring manager, technical interviews like a coding challenge and a case study, a presentation, and an onsite. They considered me for Senior Analyst instead of Staff Analyst, despite my extensive experience and previous management roles. This was based on their 'impression,' which felt unfair. The recruiter was supportive, but I would have preferred more upfront honesty about the potential down-leveling, especially since I had a competing offer at the Staff level. I was encouraged to continue with the presentation and onsite, with the hiring manager supposedly able to change their mind. Ultimately, the Senior level stuck, and the reason remained unclear, described as a 'gut feeling.' This felt unjustified and suggested that intangible factors might be prioritized over merit, which doesn't align with my values. The experience and time spent on the take-home and interviews felt like a waste, and I regret it. I suggest others carefully question the company culture and growth prospects, and be wary of the take-home assignment due to the risk of down-leveling based on subjective impressions. It might be better to pursue more worthwhile opportunities with fairer cultures.

- Share something interesting that an interviewer could learn from you.
Analyst
First, there was a recruiter reach out and screening call. Then, a 45-minute interview with the hiring manager. They asked reasonable questions, starting with going over my resume and then some probability questions that weren't too hard.
- Can you tell me about your resume?
