Data Scientist
The interview had a technical round where they asked a lot about boosting models and random forest models, covering their training process and tuning parameters. They also asked me to explain one of the deep learning models I know.
- Can you detail the structure and specifics of the models used in your projects?
- Could you walk me through every project listed on your resume?
Data Scientist
I heard back from a recruiter about a week after applying. They scheduled two back-to-back 1-hour interviews with the VP and a Senior Data Scientist, which was a bit unusual for a first round. The first interview with the VP was pretty rough; I got all the answers right, but his attitude was really off-putting and arrogant, like he was doing me a huge favor. Honestly, I don't get why he's a VP. The second interview was the complete opposite, with a really pleasant interviewer who was enthusiastic and engaged, and I answered about 99% of their questions. I was rejected a week later, and I have no idea why since I thought I did well. I don't plan on interviewing with this company again.
- Can you describe Gradient Boosting in detail?
- What is the Bias Variance Tradeoff?
- Could you discuss regularization?
Data Scientist
A recruiter contacted me by email and scheduled a 2-hour interview with two Data Scientists. The first round was surprisingly long, but I proceeded. The interviews were high-level, focusing on modeling and detailed explanations of past projects. After passing, I received a take-home assignment with a one-week deadline, which I completed in five days. The task was to predict charge-off loans. A week after submission, I hadn't heard back. After following up, the recruiter asked for another 1-2 weeks for a response. It took three weeks in total to receive a standard rejection email. The lengthy wait and generic rejection were disappointing, especially after dedicating significant time to the take-home which impacted my own job responsibilities.
- Could you explain gradient boosting and its parameters?
