First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Unknown Worlds Entertainment.
Level Designer
I applied to Unknown Worlds and after a recruiter screen, I had a 1-1 interview with a senior team member for their upcoming Subnautica 2 game. It was a warm and engaging chat. They asked about my proudest projects and games I was playing. Then the real interview started, discussing my past level design experience, specifically if I preferred organic vs. architectural levels. The next day, I was informed I wouldn't be moving forward, but received feedback. In hindsight, I think I focused too much on level scripting and not enough on designing layouts and working with geometry. My advice to aspiring LDs: clarify your specialization and really sell yourself as a world builder, not just a general LD.
- Do you prefer hard surface design versus more organic? What would you do if you were given limited directions to start a level?
Producer
It took a few weeks to get the interviews scheduled, but it went pretty smoothly. There were two interviewers, and they were both polite and seemed to know what they were looking for. The interview covered standard questions about my strengths and weaknesses, and they wanted to understand how I'd be a good fit and if I had the right skills. They also asked why I was interested in the job.
