I just emailed the PI expressing my interest, and they called me for an interview pretty quickly within the week. It was basically just me talking to the PI. They asked me a few things about my past job and what I hoped to gain from this experience. They also asked some typical interview questions like 'what are your strengths and weaknesses.' Since each professor kind of runs their own lab, I don't think there's a set hiring process, so I'm not sure how helpful this will be for others.
