Got contacted by a professor after applying for my masters degree. Had a phone interview, then got an offer not long after. We talked about my CV, my background in general, and some projects. The idea for university graduate admissions is to try and reach out to professors with matching interests and look for a project for which they may fund you, generally if you have a solid background and a matching project, it is likely you will be selected.
