The interview was pretty short, lasting about half an hour. I spoke with two interviewers from the department I'm applying to. They asked about my motivation for pursuing a PhD, specific research interests, and whether I had a supervisor or project lined up.

The interview process is basically a chat with the supervisor and current students. They'll generally test your knowledge of the subject. It really depends; for a PhD position with lots of competitors (usually due to a higher stipend), the questions will be technical and you will be asked specific details about the project you suggested. Any papers you have published before will be taken on-board as well. However, as an undergrad, you aren't expected to have published many papers on any subjects. Hence, it generally falls down to how enthusiastic about the subject you are and how willing you are to learn new concepts.

The interview process began with a written exam where I had to read a paper and then write an abstract to summarize its findings. Following that, I had an interview with the principal investigators (PIs). They asked some challenging questions, but they all seemed logical in retrospect. The questions covered my past research, how I might continue that research, and discussions about relevant literature.
