I had a Zoom video chat with the hiring manager. It was around 30 minutes long. The manager seemed nice and asked standard questions. It was a bit odd when they mentioned they couldn't share the salary info and suggested I look it up myself. They seemed interested, but I never heard back. HR sent the typical rejection email.

Behavioral Presentation

I had a screening interview with a panel first, then an in-person interview on campus which was nice. I met with the Dean and the team, and they were interesting. The odd part was that two weeks later, they emailed my references without asking me first. My references had to answer seven long essay questions that seemed more like a self-evaluation (like weaknesses and communication problems) than a normal reference check. One reference got frustrated because the system kept timing out when she tried to save. After all that, I got a generic email from HR saying I wasn't selected. I felt a phone call or at least a personal email would have been better after all the time and effort I put in.

I applied and then didn't hear anything for about a month. I had a phone screen with HR where they asked a lot of questions asking for very specific examples of scenarios. The HR phone screen was about an hour. They said if I was chosen, the hiring manager would schedule an interview. About two weeks later, I got called and they set up an interview. It was a panel interview with about 4 people from the department. They asked the same scenario questions, but phrased as 'story time' questions, asking for exact instances. This interview also lasted about an hour. They asked if I wanted to be informed about the decision, and I said yes. I never heard back after that, no call or email.

I found out about the role through an internal contact, as the company website is hard to search. I submitted my resume and two letters of support. The interview, with my future boss, was about a week later. It felt more like a casual chat about the projects, work environment, expectations, and how my experience could fit the lab's needs, rather than a difficult interview. Salary and benefits weren't discussed. I heard back within a week and, after a verbal agreement, got the official offer letter detailing my job description, expectations, salary, and benefits.

  • How do you see yourself fitting in?
