First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at University of Nevada, Reno.
Administrative Faculty
The hiring process for an administrative faculty role is pretty tough. First, you have a phone interview with a group of interviewers who ask standard questions like your experience, how it relates, and your accomplishments. If you pass that, the next step is to give a presentation about the job duties to the interview panel and any staff or faculty who want to attend. After your presentation, you'll do a panel interview, similar to the phone interview but with more detailed questions, like what you think is needed to successfully carry out the job functions. The process usually ends with one-on-one interviews with your potential managers, who will go over the reporting structure and your role. It's a really detailed process and usually takes the whole day.
- Can you share the single most successful project or task you've completed in your career?
Computer Systems Administrator
I applied for the sysadmin role and heard back in about a week to set up a phone interview. That call was pretty standard – I introduced myself and they did a quick check of my tech skills with the search committee, which included folks from IT and the departments I'd support. A week later, I was invited back for what turned out to be about a 7-hour interview day. I met with several IT teams and groups from the departments I'd be working with. They also showed me around campus and provided breakfast and lunch.
- Many questions were based on situational scenarios and "what-would-you-do" type questions. Occasionally, a technical question was included, particularly from other server and sys admins, for example, how to edit policy in AD.
Research Scientist
The interview process is primarily based on your resume and is determined by the Principal Investigator who is hiring. A presentation of your previous research is typically required and can be conducted remotely via Skype. Not many questions are usually asked, as the interview mainly serves to confirm your ability to execute the research project and your general personality fit.
- Tell me about your previous research.
- Can you discuss the technical specifics of your past research?
- Are you capable of undertaking this research project?
Library Technician
After submitting my online application, the hiring manager called me about 2-3 weeks later. They didn't ask me any questions on the phone but instead invited me for an in-person interview. I met with the library manager for the interview. She asked me some questions about my resume and some general interview questions. She also gave me a tour of the place. I didn't get the job; I got a rejection letter about two weeks later.
- Can you provide 10 words to describe yourself?
