It depends on the office and the position, but it usually starts with a written round, then maybe some Zoom interviews or in-person interviews, and then possibly an in-person round.

The application to interview phase was long and drawn out, with a required academic hiring committee that took a few months to complete. This took away from potential quality. Most candidates could not wait on the job search length. They also pay low and are not transparent about it.

I applied for a Business Administrative Associate role at the U of I College of Medicine in Peoria that had been open since October 2024. The interview was at the end of January, and I never heard back. The position is still posted and has been re-advertised, which is frustrating after 4 months of interviews for a staff position. The interviewers seemed stuffy and unfriendly, likely expecting perfection. My experiences with the Urbana-Champaign campus have been similar: poor communication, rude interviewers, and long, drawn-out processes without an offer. I'm no longer applying there due to their disorganization.

It was a pretty thorough process, I talked to 2 different people and they were both really nice and upfront. The place seems great, it just didn't line up with what I had going on at the time. I'd suggest it to anyone looking.
