Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at University of Houston System.
Secretary
I talked with two people from the development team. After that, they took me on a quick tour of the department. Then, I was brought back to a desk to do a skills test where I had to use Outlook to send an email, schedule an event, and make tasks. Then, I used Word to create a memo and finally, Excel where I had to use a formula to get totals for a spreadsheet.
- Tell me about your knowledge of our company.
Executive Administrative Assistant
I had one panel interview that lasted about 30 minutes with at least five people. They were all really nice and they gave me a quick rundown of the job and what they expected. I got the job offer via email about two weeks after that. Then there was a background check, and after that, I got the official offer. The salary was better than I thought it would be, and I started two weeks after accepting.
- Can you tell me about a time you juggled multiple deadlines? How organized are you?
Secretary
I interviewed with the Development department, which included the Development Officer and the Development Coordinator. They asked questions about secretarial duties and Microsoft programs. Getting to campus can be tricky, so I recommend arriving about thirty to forty minutes early to allow time for finding parking and the right building. You should also be prepared to discuss why you're interested in this particular company or department.
- How would you rate your skills in emailing?
- How would you rate your skills in creating Excel files?
- How would you rate your skills in setting appointments?
