First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Universiteit Antwerpen.
Professor
The interview was online and included a brief presentation and then a Q&A session with the interview panel. A teaching demonstration was also part of the process. Because of COVID, it had to be recorded and sent in a week before the interview. Normally, the teaching demo would be live and the interview would be in Antwerp.
- What contributions would you make to this role and the team?
PhD Student
Applied online through the UniAntwerp website right before the deadline. Got an email from the professor a few days later (he misspelled my name a lot) saying my background and skills were a great fit for the project. He set up an interview with a selection committee for the next week and told me to prep a 10-minute presentation about myself, my motivation, and my research. Didn't know who the 5 interviewers were. The interview lasted about an hour and also included a presentation by the Professor about the project. That's when I found out there were actually 2 PhD positions available, not just one. They asked me questions based on my presentation, and one interviewer made me feel uneasy by asking really personal questions, clearly trying to get under my skin and act like he knew everything about me from my 10-minute talk. I got to ask them all the questions I had. The professor emailed me 4 days later saying I was ranked 5th out of 5 candidates because I lacked experience with NGS, which he said was critical for the project. He rejected me. (Which is weird because I never claimed to have that experience anywhere.) It was a lot of work for nothing. A complete waste of time.
- Could you tell me why you haven't published any papers yet?
- What would you consider your proudest achievement as a researcher?
- Are you familiar with NGS, and do you have any prior experience with it?
Researcher
Had a 1 on 1 with the lab head, talked about the research topic and needed qualifications. Also discussed potential financial recruitment procedures (e.g., application with FWO) and went over my CV. We discussed literature research and made a rough plan for the research.
- Can you tell me about your interest in the topic?
- What is your background?
- What are your ambitions?
HRM Advisor
Stugge procedure and finally no written feedback. Actually, they probably already know who they want to hire in advance. It looks fancy with all sorts of tests and trials, but they could save money by just looking at experience and education and filtering out the best candidates that way. Tests say little about real abilities.
- How would you fit into the team?
