First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at United Stationers.
MBA Intern
I had a quick 1-on-1 interview on campus with an HR person. Then, I got picked for the final round in Deerfield. There was a dinner the night before with all the candidates and senior leaders. The next day, I had 3 interviews, each 45 minutes long, with people I'd be working with closely. The interviews were pretty chill. They asked basic questions like walking through my resume, asking about my 5-year plan, why I wanted to work there, a time I dealt with difficult people, and my Excel skill level.
- Can you walk me through your resume?
- Tell me about your career aspirations in the next five years.
- What motivates your interest in working with us?
Department Manager
This was my first in-person interview at USSCO, I'd already had a phone interview which was pretty easy and comfortable. The in-person one was with an HR person and a manager. They were great people, but I was a bit discouraged since the questions felt scripted, and some were repeats from the phone interview. When I got to ask questions, I asked about the people I'd be supervising and about turnover, which concerned me after reading some company postings claiming very little turnover. I'm still interested in the position, but they had 120 applicants, so I probably won't hear back for 2-3 weeks.
- Can you tell me about a time you got criticism during a performance review from your boss? What was it and how did you handle it?
- Share an experience of having a hire who didn't work out. What was the situation and how did you manage it?
Marketing
I had an initial 1:1 with a recruiter. It was pretty chill; we mostly just talked through my resume, and she'd stop to ask about past jobs. It felt more like a chat than an interview. Then, they flew me out to Deerfield and covered my hotel. I had four hour-long interviews there, mostly with different marketing directors. These were much more like conversations, not strictly behavioral. One interview was with another recruiter, and those questions were behavioral. The whole thing was smooth and not stressful. Everyone was friendly and seemed happy.
- What would my former employer say are the things I should be concerned about if they hired me?
- Could you provide another example of what my previous employer might say I should be worried about if I were to be hired?
Product Manager
I applied online and it took three weeks for HR to get back to me to set up a time with the hiring manager. They asked for my availability and then scheduled the interview during a time I wasn't free. When I arrived, the hiring manager kept me waiting for 20 minutes. She didn't apologize or even mention the delay. Our meeting lasted about 40 minutes, with her doing most of the talking.
- Could you tell me about yourself?
