The interview was panel-style on Zoom, so I was looking at the whole interviewer group at once. Everyone was cordial and the person running the search was quite friendly, but they offered very little feedback or response. After the interview, they were remarkably uncommunicative, not even responding to follow up emails. They did finally follow up once they had selected another candidate. A disappointing experience, though everyone there seemed nice and professional.

The interview process started with a lunch interview with around 7 employees from various departments. It felt more personal, with questions about family. Afterward, I got a tour of the office and the naval campus. Everyone was friendly, but they seemed to be pushing the government job very hard. I noticed there weren't many young engineers or female engineers on staff. They were quite vague about the job responsibilities and seemed discouraged that I have children. I overheard one female interviewer commenting to the hiring manager about how I'd manage travel with two kids. They did ask me about travel, and I confirmed my interest in traveling as part of the role. Sadly, I didn't receive an offer. For women in male-dominated fields, my advice is not to mention children and to remove car seats from your car before an interview. The female interviewer even mentioned seeing my two car seats to the group. I suspect being a mother was the reason I didn't get the job.

I applied by the deadline and had been talking to my congresswoman's office for about 18 months about the nomination. After submitting, I got a call a few months later and they scheduled an interview for me a couple weeks after that. At the end of the interview, they told me I'd hear back in Feb about the nomination.

The interview process involved multiple interviews spread across a full day. I had discussions with both WC leadership and academic staff like professors and student tutors. Additionally, I met with the director and the dean. It was a good opportunity to experience the campus and get to know the team.
