First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at United Methodist Church.
Administrative Assistant
First, there's a phone interview, and if you pass that, you go on to a second online interview. The first interview is likely with HR, and they ask standard questions. The interviewer will ask you questions while looking at a document and will rate/type your answers. This helps managers decide who to move to the second interview.
- What is the most complex Excel function you have used?
Executive Director of Technology
It was all Zoom meetings, 5 in total. The last meeting was with the General Secretary. They asked for references before that. I was told that when I got the offer, I should pray and think about it before accepting. Then two weeks passed with no response, and I got a form letter email saying they decided to go with someone else. It was really unprofessional, and I didn't appreciate them sharing my references so carelessly. The UMC is facing a lot of issues right now, which explains the high turnover in admin roles. The declining number of congregations will definitely keep this position and organization in a difficult spot.
- Regarding cybersecurity, how would you ensure the organization's safety?
- Can you discuss how you would collaborate across various service lines?
- How would you provide support to a wide range of user groups with different needs?
Dietary Aide
The whole process took about two months. A few days after applying, they'd give you a call and ask if you'd want to do a phone interview. Since I was swamped with school and had a messy schedule, I chose to do an email interview instead. Following that, I got another call asking me to come in for an in-person interview. After that, I had to get a TB test done, which took more than a week. During this time, I also had to complete a lot of forms related to taxes. They also set me up with a private investigator for a quick background check. Once all of that was done, you come in for orientation, which is about two hours long and usually in the morning, and then you're all set.
- Have you worked before and what were your responsibilities?
- How would you describe yourself in about three words?
- Can you describe a difficult situation you were in and how you handled it?
Senior Minister
There are several steps that the national church organization requires a candidate to complete before entering the hiring process. First, you'll meet with the district board of the area you are applying to. Second, you'll meet with the district superintendent of that area. Third, you'll meet with the congregational board there. Hiring is based on educational experience, pastoring experience, and apprenticeships.
- Can you share your personal views?
- How would you describe your management style?
- What are your thoughts on social issues?
