First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at United Franchise Group.
Marketing Coordinator
There were 3 interviews in total. I first spoke with the hiring manager, then met with the general brand managers, and finally the CMO. It was a pretty laid-back and easy process. They asked typical questions about my past work and some more specific ones about franchise support. No tasks or group interviews, everything was one-on-one.
- How have you worked with people who have different levels of technical skills?
- Can you describe your previous work experiences?
- What is your background in providing franchise support?
Vice President International Operations
The process was efficient and straightforward. It started with an in-person meeting with the hiring leader, David Baxter (COO), followed by a Skype call with Jim Tatum (President Signarama), one of the international leaders. This all happened just 3 days after my initial call. About a week later, I was invited back to the office to meet with several more individuals, including Mark Johnson (President EmbroidMe), Ray Titus (CFO and Owner), Tony Foley (International Director), and finally, Jim Butler and Bill Luce (Sales). This second meeting lasted for about 4 hours. While everyone I met with was very polite and asked good questions, making me feel quite comfortable, the owner, Ray Titus, was an exception.
- What are your compensation expectations?
Operations Manager
It began with a recruiter phone call, then some Skype interviews, including one with the Regional VP. After that, they arranged my travel for a "Shotgun" interview day where I had 5 interviews in about 3-4 hours. They said they'd reimburse my cab fare from the airport, which they didn't. The HQ is impressive and they talk about supporting franchisees, but they seem disorganized. We discussed salary before booking my flight, with the recruiter giving one range and the VP a lower one, but I was told it was negotiable. After the interview, I was promised an offer by Friday or Monday, but instead got an email offer for much less than discussed. When I called the VP, she said that was all they could offer. Then, they sent an email saying that offer email was a mistake and they were still preparing mine. After I called that out as unprofessional, they emailed saying no offer was on the table and then a "dear John" email saying they chose another candidate. I'm okay with not getting the job but the handling of the emails and the lack of reimbursement and communication is unprofessional.
- What interests you about working with this kind of franchise?
Regional Vice President of Business Development
It was a 4 part interview process. Started with a Skype call with HR, then a Skype interview with 2 Executives. After that, I was flown down to their home office in Florida for an interview with the CEO Titus and 4 other Executives. We then went out to lunch and I was taken back to the airport. Later, I got an email saying they had chosen another candidate who had franchise experience, even though that wasn't a requirement based on the Job description. They suggested I re-apply for other positions. The job was re-posted, I reapplied 2x but haven't heard anything back at all.
