Had a phone screen that felt a bit long/in-depth for a recruiter call, covering typical first-round topics, past projects, and my interest in working at a labor union. Then had a video call with a project manager, which was more about team building than technical skills.

The interview process was pretty straightforward and they really asked a lot of questions about my organizing experience. I knew they weren’t serious about me when they asked about how I felt about salting. Such a disappointment because UNITE HERE does great work, but I think they use these interviews of candidates they don’t see as good fits as a means for recruiting salts.

The interview went well but the process to move on took too long to think I had a shot. The person was generally good to speak with and we talked about the entire company and the job itself. I would prefer is the wait time was shorter for a response after the interview was done and not wait a whopping 3 weeks. Fine but could do better. There's also a skills assessment, that involved 3 assignments. One was a math question, nothing special. 2nd one was a test on Microsoft Excel test and how well you can follow directions. 3rd one was an email composition test in how well can you yes-man to a fake scenario. Would rather have training, even though I know how to do these things.

After a great interview I was asked to come in for a day long unpaid test that involved fictional tasks like engaging actual businesses and vendors. I'll confess it was off-putting and the fact that it was essentially voluntary seemed inappropriate for a Union (I'm from a 3 generation union family). Afterwards I spoke with a senior member of the Union who told me it everyone does it and it's a test of "humility". I was also told that if I wouldn't be getting an offer I would hear nothing. The whole thing struck me ver unprofessional.

  • Was this a loyalty test?
