First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Union Square Hospitality Group.
Intern
It was a recorded interview, so they were looking for concise answers. The hiring manager asked a lot of questions but didn't want long answers. They asked about me, why I'd be a good fit for the company, and about my community involvement and its importance to me. They also asked which departments I'd be interested in. Make sure you know about the company and why you'd be a good fit.
- What kind of community service have you been involved in, and what's the significance of that to you?
Talent Acquisition Manager
The interview process started with a video call and then moved on to three in-person interviews, all packed into a single afternoon, lasting about 2 hours total. It felt really smooth, and I appreciated that the interviewer respected my time. They were flexible with my busy schedule and asked some really good questions.
- What's motivating your interest in exploring new opportunities right now?
Human Resources
The interview was adversarial and rude. The questions were phrased in an insulting and almost accusatory manner. The interviewer was disengaged from the start. Overall, it was borderline offensive and not conducive to actually sharing information or assessing a match. It’s a real wonder they manage to make any hires. Happy to dodge that bullet if the interviewers represent the company, which they likely do.
- Given my experience with x, why do you think I could do this job?
Server Assistant
I met with the GM. Originally, I was going for a hostess job. We sat down, chatted for about 20 minutes. I had zero restaurant experience then, but I mentioned wanting to grow in the industry, so he suggested I try for a Server Assistant role instead. I went home to consider it. He called a few days later to offer me the job, and it felt like I was already part of the team. I learned a lot as a Server Assistant about restaurant details and everyone was super supportive. I eventually became a server, but I'm really thankful for his advice.
- What are your career aspirations?
