The interview was open, informative, and direct. The atmosphere was positive and reactive, with all questions answered and no topics seemingly off-limits. They encouraged openness and questioning. Information about the offer, market, opportunities, and challenges was provided and discussed. The tone was respectful, interested, and friendly, yet straightforward.

It was a pretty standard interview process. First, HR set up a 1-hour phone call with a Senior Project Manager where we discussed my experience with Agile and vendors. Then, I had an in-person interview that included a 1-hour session with a Senior Project Manager and a Senior Engineer, followed by another 1-hour interview with a different Senior Project Manager. They asked about my past experience, the kinds of projects I've managed, and how I'd handle certain situations. I got a standard rejection email without any specific feedback.

I got contacted by an HR person on linkedin who wanted me to call them, so I did. They asked about my salary expectations and why I was looking to leave my current job. Then they hit me with 10 quick yes/no screening questions about Java knowledge. After that, I had a technical phone interview scheduled, and I also had to fill out an application and send my resume. The interview was supposed to be an hour but it lasted about 50 minutes. We chatted a bit about ourselves, then they looked at my resume and asked questions based on that. They asked things like what JSP & JSTL are, the benefits of SVN vs CVS, why a directory's size doubles in SVN, about Garbage Collection and JVM args for it, why choose Set or List, and what REST, Dependency Injection, Inversion of Control, ThreadLocal, and Transactions are. They also asked how I'd improve Java and if I contribute to open source. The next day, they sent me an email saying I wasn't a good fit for the Java Developer role.

Technical Coding

The phone interview was with a technical architect from Unicon, focusing entirely on core Java concepts rather than my resume or experience. It's crucial to review your Java fundamentals beforehand, as the questions were mostly comparative, such as contrasting Java with other OO languages, checked vs. unchecked exceptions, interfaces vs. abstract classes, and also included queries about garbage collection, the JVM, and the comparable interface.

Confirmed questions2 questions
  • Could you explain the differences between Java and other Object-Oriented programming languages?
  • How do checked and unchecked exceptions differ in Java?
