I started as a post doc right after graduation and had only one phone interview. This was during COVID, so it might not have been as tough as usual. Things could be different now. In-person interviews might be needed but I'm not totally sure.

It was a 30-minute interview with the branch chiefs first, then a second interview for an hour with the branch chiefs and supervisors. After that, there was a 30-minute chat with some employees. The first interview went by super fast, so it was really important to make sure you hit your main points and sell yourself during the initial 'walk me through your experience and why you want to work here' question. Because after that, and them explaining the role and process, there wasn't much time left for other questions.

It was a two-step interview process. It was a panel interview, with one in-person and one online. They followed the typical government interview steps, asking standard questions and then ranking candidates against each other. You should prepare by knowing KSA questions and answers.

It was a virtual interview because of Covid, with 3 interviewers on the panel. They had about 15 questions ready and asked them one by one, taking notes as they went. It was pretty standard, no surprises, just asking about my experience, education, and if I was passionate about the regulatory field and the FDA. Not much chat, mostly them asking questions. Then I got to ask them questions and we chatted a bit. It felt fair and straightforward.
