First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tutored by Teachers.
Tutor
You submit an application and answer questions about your tutoring experiences. There's no direct interview when you submit the application. You have to wait up to two weeks to see if they will actually give you one.
- Do you have a degree?
- Do you have a TEFL certification?
Mentor Teacher
You'll have a remote interview with a TbT interviewer. Then, you'll schedule a sample lesson with another interviewer, which is about 10 minutes long. After your sample lesson, the interviewer will discuss it with you, covering what went well and what could be improved. There's a chance you might get a job offer right away.
- Tell me about a situation where you had to modify your teaching approach.
Tutor
So first there was this quick 15 min screening interview. Then, if they liked you, you'd get to do a 10 min lesson, followed by a 15 min interview where they'd give you feedback and ask about your lesson plans. They provided a standard plan and also a list of specific students you'd need to plan for (like, differentiate). I felt it was pretty fair though. It let me show off how comfortable I was with using video conferencing tools, screen sharing, and how I'd keep students engaged.
- What Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) activities would you incorporate into your lesson?
- In what ways is your lesson culturally responsive and relevant?
Online Tutor
I had a one-on-one interview that was pre-recorded. They gave me a time limit for some questions, like 1 minute for each question.
- Tell me about your teaching experience.
