I was recommended for this role to the first person who reached out, and after sending my resume, I was told to apply online. The job posting had been pulled down, but she got it put back up and fixed issues with the application saving my answers so I could apply. Next, a different person contacted me and we scheduled a phone call. He was significantly late to our call, which became a recurring issue. Our conversation went well, and my background in training commodity-based sales for large corporations seemed like a good fit for True Value's current changes. He mentioned that the next week would be better for a face-to-face meeting with the hiring manager if I could arrange time off and send him dates. For over three weeks, I would send dates, rearrange my work schedule, and he would repeatedly say those dates didn't work, asking for more dates, with no confirmation or follow-up. To demonstrate my capabilities, I even created a list of 300 local hardware stores. After three weeks, he stated the decision-maker felt my extensive experience wouldn't apply. I contacted both individuals I had been communicating with, and the original contact mentioned the hiring manager was concerned I was overqualified and would leave quickly, despite my long tenure in my current role. Based on this, I requested not to be contacted for future positions. However, the next day, I received a system-generated recruiting email for the same role, which he admitted was automated. He assured me I wouldn't receive them anymore. This recruiting experience has been the worst of my career.

  • How would you utilize your experience to create training for a program focused on selling our products to hardware stores not affiliated with the True Value brand?

I first met with the recruiter at an on-campus career fair in the fall, and then had an on-campus interview the following week. Both the recruiter and interviewer were really helpful. After that, I had a phone interview with the hiring manager. He seemed great and mentioned I'd speak with another hiring manager, but then I heard nothing for three months. In the spring, I saw the job posted again, so I reached out to the hiring manager. We chatted again, and then I interviewed with the second hiring manager. They offered me the job, but I declined because I had another offer and the communication was really poor.
