Technical Coding Behavioral

It was a 3-part interview process using the Woven platform. AI was cool for the coding part, but not for the two behavioral questions. The coding part involved working with an existing codebase to add a new feature.

Technical Presentation

I'll just say be careful with this one. The CPO reached out to me over Linkedin, I met with a recruiter and she seemed nice and genuinely excited about my background. However, I definitely am under the impression that they used me for a quick project without any intention of ever hiring me. After meeting with the hiring manager, I was told I'd be moving forward, and received a few emails from a third party platform to complete the 3-part technical assessment. It took me several hours to prep and the assignment itself was about 3 hours. The next morning, they suddenly decided they wanted a different type of take-home project instead. I spent a whole all day Monday (a holiday) building out SQL queries, DBT models, and dashboard redesigns with detailed recommendations. They told me how much they liked my work, scheduled another interview to talk through - that interview also went well. The next morning, the recruiter sent a generic rejection email with no explanation. It honestly felt like they used my work and moved on. Definitely hints at how the company treats its employees and their time.

Started with a recruiter phone screening. Then, I had a good talk with the hiring manager about the job, its impact, and my background. After that, there was a technical assessment that felt unprepared. I then had a 30-minute chat with someone from Operations about job challenges, like dealing with the CEO and tough problems. Next was a friendly 'coffee chat' with the CFO about company culture and leadership. Finally, I met with the CEO, who was late and distracted, and asked technical questions without warning, showing little interest in my portfolio and wanting to wrap up quickly. Overall, I'd say AVOID this place, it doesn't feel welcoming.

Technical System Design Behavioral

Standard software engineering interview gauntlet: first a hiring manager meeting, then an automated technical test (Woven), followed by a system design interview, and a deep dive technical based on past experience. After that, what would be a normal reference check, or what I'd describe as a collective and offensive time waster. The technical team was great to talk to. They really sold the company and product well. The technical lead seemed a bit intense and stressed, but that's expected in a tech startup; been there, done that. Maybe there's more there in hindsight... Everyone seemed experienced, technically sound, and had good emotional intelligence/soft skills.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • Woven asked an architectural question to troubleshoot the likely source of an issue.
  • Write a 'Mock e-mail to a more junior developer' with an action item to help them find a root cause of a system issue, mentoring them on how to get them if they don't have experience (Such as using observability tools, etc).
  • The rest of the interviews were very individualized and standard.
