Site Reliability Engineer
The interviewer couldn't give me technical details because they weren't in a tech role. The job posting was vague, and without more info from the interviewer, it was hard to highlight my relevant skills. I felt like my time wasn't valued. The interviewer should have been better prepared with more information.
- Could you share some details about your past work experiences?
Software Engineer
It was a pretty standard interview. I spoke with HR for about 30 minutes, and they mentioned they don't look at resumes, preferring candidates to describe themselves. Later, I had technical interviews where I answered specific implementation questions. Then, I met with the boss for a casual personality interview, again without a resume. It felt like they were looking for 'friendly team players,' though I wasn't always sure what the questions were aiming for. The company is transitioning from a startup to a mid-size company, which seems to be a strain, as some technical folks appeared overwhelmed. They were excited to discuss their work, but there was some uncertainty about the specific role I'd fill, suggesting potential staffing issues. They mentioned offers are based on their internal salary surveys, with salaries set at 60% of the range and non-negotiable, intended to improve diversity by attracting 'good but underpaid people.' This felt like a cost-cutting measure that might deter candidates seeking market rate. Despite being from an under-represented group, the offer was significantly below average, about 20% less than expected for my skills. I was concerned about potential high turnover or a disproportionate number of new graduates, so it didn't seem like the right fit.
- Can you tell me about someone at work who inspired you and explain why?
Accountant
Had an initial 1.5 hour lunch meeting with the internal recruiter to talk about my background, learn about the company's goals, culture, and the job details. The second interview, two business days later, was 2 hours long and involved meeting the VP of Finance and Operations to discuss how my skills would meet the company's needs. I also met with HR and the accountant I'd be working with. Finally, there was a 30-minute chat with the CEO where I mainly asked questions about the company's broader operations and practices. Overall, it was a great experience, giving me good exposure and a feel for the company.
- Which fictional character or real person best represents your personality?
Human Resources
The interview process was quick in terms of timing, but in terms of the company respecting a candidate's time - it was a bit disappointing. I was asked to meet with Transloc employees 4 times, and ultimately was not chosen for the job. The rejection did not come in the form of a phone call but rather a late night email. The questions posed to me during the process did not reflect a team that was knowledgeable at how to effectively conduct interviews. My experience was in line with the role requirements, but I was not asked questions to get to those answers. I believe that his vision will take the company far, but I believe much is lacking in the way of a wonderful candidate experience.
- How would you approach improving company culture as the organization expands?
