First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Toyota Technical Center.
Mechanical Engineering
It was a pretty straightforward interview process. Started with some questions about why I was interested in Toyota. Then they asked the standard behavioral questions, like dealing with team conflicts and succeeding in a team setting. There was also a simple technical question where I had to sketch a 3D object from different views. They also asked about my hobbies and free time activities.
- What motivates your interest in Toyota?
- Could you share an experience where you navigated a challenging team dynamic?
- Tell me about a successful team collaboration and its results.
Powertrain Engineer
The company conducts 2 interviews for this role. In total, 3 people were involved: an HR representative and two managers from different divisions. The first interview lasted for 1 hour, and the second one was 2 hours long. They asked about 5 STAR-method questions, and I suggest using your resume to help answer them.
- Tell me about a situation where you had a disagreement with your teammates and it turned out you were wrong. How did you resolve it and what were your key takeaways?
Engineer
Toyota reached out to me because they saw my resume from my engineering college. I first had a phone interview, and then they set up another interview about two days later. The first call was basically a resume walkthrough with some typical STAR questions. The next interview was at the TTC, where I met three managers (one in physical testing, one in simulations, all mechanical engineers), a general manager, and an HR person. They also went over my resume and asked about projects I've done. I then gave a 10-15 minute presentation, and they asked some questions during and after. The questions were interesting but not overly tough, and everyone seemed engaged. After that, I answered a few technical questions, which weren't too hard, though they did help me out when I got a bit stuck on one. We finished with a 15-20 minute tour of their new, nice facilities. The work vibe felt very business-focused with open desks, typical for Japanese companies. Everyone was really friendly and seemed to know their stuff.
- Draw the shear and bending moment diagrams for a simply supported beam with a center load.
- Given an acceleration curve, draw the velocity and displacement profiles.
- Mesh a part.
Engineering Technical Assistant
My interview process involved a 45-minute phone call initially, and then a second interview which had a short live coding and Japanese assessment. Although this test is usually done in person, Toyota was cool and let me do it over Skype. I mostly talked to a recruiter.
- Would you be open to traveling for occasional team meetings in LA?
