First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Torch.
Analyst
It was a pretty standard investment banking interview process. First, there was a recruiter call, then a second round with a recruiter that included fit and technical questions. The final round was in their office and consisted of three interviews, one of which was a modeling test where I had to build a three-statement model.
- Can you suggest two companies that you believe should merge?
Manager
I submitted an application online and then I had an interview with the department manager for the following week. It was about 45 minutes of getting to know me. It was very transparent and casual. Then a follow up interview was scheduled for the next week. I interviewed with some people in the position that asked more role specific and situational questions. The next interview was a presentation to the department. I feel like the amount of interviews is a bit unnecessary considering the pay is so low. The second interview could be mixed with the first of at least scheduled sooner to make the interview process around two weeks instead of 4+.
- Is the offered salary acceptable to you?
Software Engineer
First, there was a screen call, then a 90-minute panel interview with the Engineering Manager and some engineers, covering 3 technical assessment areas. After that, I interviewed with the COO. The people I spoke with were great, and the interview process felt easy-going and efficient. I appreciated the types of questions asked, as it wasn't just LeetCode-style brain teasers but assessed a more holistic skill set for a software engineer. The platform is cool, and the engineers are talented and friendly. It was a tough choice, and I ended up going with another company, but that's not a reflection on Torch at all; I would have been happy working there.
- Could you define a schema for a theoretical system, and then answer follow-up questions about how you would utilize this theoretical database?
- Following up on the data modeling question, can you elaborate on how you would use this theoretical database?
Customer Success Manager
I had a great first conversation with a Director, we had great chemistry and aligned on the role and company direction. The second interview with the Sr. Director was helpful and reinforced my interest, it lasted 30 minutes. My third interview was a panel with a CSM team leader and CS Operations Manager. It didn't feel as cohesive, but I walked away feeling good. After a week, I got feedback that I 'talked at them' for 15 minutes and they had concerns about my ability to thrive in a small startup. I was looking to join a small startup and have experience thriving in that environment. I was most recently employed by a direct competitor. I felt my vast CS experience and recent industry experience would be desirable. They are moving forward with candidates who 'better matched' their needs.
