First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tomorrow.io.
Senior Software Engineer
The entire hiring process spanned over a month. Initially, I applied for a frontend-heavy Full Stack Developer role. The first step was a meet-and-greet with the department head, covering my past experience and general getting-to-know-you questions. This was followed by a coding interview where I had to build a React and Node.js app connected to Tomorrow's API, visualizing data with a graph based on a set standard deviation. Unfortunately, I didn't pass this stage. They then offered me a different Full Stack Developer position on the AI team. After speaking with the team lead, I had an architecture interview at their office. The challenge was to conceptualize a system for monitoring weather changes and issuing alerts according to user specifications. I didn't succeed in this final interview, realizing my skills weren't quite what they needed. One of the interviewers also lost their temper, making the experience uncomfortable. Generally, the process felt poorly defined and lengthy, especially since I found out the first job was more frontend and the second more backend. Overall, it was a quite negative experience due to the disorganized and unclear hiring process.
- Could you live code a React and Node.js application? This application should connect to Tomorrow's API and display the data in a graph on the client side, according to a predefined standard deviation.
- For the architecture interview, the task was to design a system that listens for weather changes and sends alerts based on user-defined conditions.
Software Engineer
After a quick initial phone chat, I was sent a home task. Once I finished that, I had my first technical interview. The team at Tomorrow.io were really helpful when I had questions about the task. Then came two more technical interviews: the first one was a whiteboard coding session, and the second one focused on system design. After that, I had an interview with HR and then one with a group leader. Everyone I met was super friendly and made the whole thing a good experience. The recruiter guiding me through it all was very communicative and got back to me fast with answers.
- Tell me about a past project, focusing on its design and the decisions you made.
- Can you walk me through a design question related to a project you've done, explaining the design choices?
Software Developer
I had a quick phone call with the hiring manager and then got a big take-home assignment. It took me a while, and I even did all the extra bits. Later, I got a call saying I didn't get the job. When I asked why, they said my code was hardcoded, which it wasn't. Then they admitted they hadn't really looked closely at it. Total waste of my time and effort.
- Complete a home assignment to build a full system and deploy it.
