First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tobin & Company Investment Banking Group.
Investment Banking Analyst
First, we talked about the DCF and basic knowledge of financial statements, like how the three statements connect. In the second round, it was more of a casual chat with the Managing Director.
- Can you explain how the three main financial statements are linked?
- What are the primary methods for valuation?
- Could you define what a DCF model is?
Intern
I interviewed with an associate and then the MD/owner. The MD was extremely rude and quick to play the victim. Based on the MD's demeanor, I suspect working at Tobin & Co. would be a very toxic and regressive environment. I'd particularly advise minority candidates to be cautious, as the MD might judge you solely on your demographics. If you value yourself beyond just your demographic identity, I'd steer clear of this company entirely. I also learned that the MD isn't highly respected in the investment banking community, partly due to these issues. The MD barely mentioned that the internship is in a legal gray area because it's unpaid and likely doesn't meet Department of Labor standards, making it a potential lawsuit. Even modest investment banks shouldn't have issues with providing pay. Additionally, I'd hesitate to call Tobin & Co. a legitimate bank, given their minimal deal activity. If you're seeking genuine experience and compensation, look elsewhere. Considering this company is one of my biggest career regrets. Buyer beware.
- Could you provide an overview of your resume?
- What motivates your interest in investment banking?
- Can you answer some technical questions?
Analyst
The interview process with Tobin was truly the most unprofessional interaction I’ve had with someone who purports to work in investment banking. After a phone screen with two of the unpaid analysts, I was asked to interview with Justine by phone. Though I was told in the email that Justine would call me at the appointed time, she did not. When I called her a few minutes later, she proceeded to immediately chastise me, saying that an analyst should never expect an “MD” to call. Once the “interview” finally began, I briefly walked Justine through my resume. She suddenly began lecturing me on the perils of being a woman on Wall St. and detailed how difficult her career path had been. After this sob story finally concluded, Justine at last decided to ask her first question of the interview. Rather than discussing my experience, education, or desire for the position, she asked how many minorities were members of my fraternity during college... As a follow up, she asked what I personally had done to ensure diversity was achieved. After a final question about whether I was interested in the buy-side or sell-side of finance, the interview concluded. A few days later, one of Tobin’s unpaid analysts emailed me (with Justine copied) to say that while they were impressed with my resume, Justine didn’t feel that my “values fit with the culture of the firm” and that she is “very sensitive to this subject being a woman in investment banking”, thus I was not a good fit for the role. I was in complete agreement after that bizarre experience. Looking back, I’m embarrassed I even took the time to interview at Tobin. Now that I work in IB, I can say that no one knows who Justine is or acknowledges Tobin & Co. as a legitimate bank.
- What actions have you taken personally to foster diversity within your fraternity?
- Could you explain the various methods for company valuation?
- What have you done personally to ensure diversity was achieved?
Regulatory/Business Strategic Business Lead
It's a very casual interview. The interviewer will tell you about how the firm operates, and then they'll ask you some basic technical questions, like what valuation methods are used in investment banking. The rest of the questions are more about whether you're a good fit for investment banking, and specifically for Tobin & Company IBG.
- Describe an ethical dilemma you've faced.
- Are you the best fit for investment banking, especially for Tobin & Company IBG?
- What are the types of valuation methods in investment banking?
