& Process

I got my foot in the door because I knew someone who knew the manager. After applying, I was offered the job. I then had to fill out some background information and undergo a medical and physical screening. The physical involved lifting about 25 lbs to waist height 5 times, then 50 lbs to waist height 10 times (or vice versa). I also had to carry a 50 lb toolbox about 6 yards and lift a tire onto a table about 10 times. After about two weeks, I started my first day.

I was expecting to interview with the zone manager, but instead met with the store manager first. I left after 15 minutes because the pay was not what I expected. Then the zone manager called me and clarified the correct pay for the position. We continued the interview over the phone. He mentioned that there's no set time limit for the trainee learning period, and managers aren't usually ready for a store in less than 6 months. He was quite condescending and said it takes about a year to be fully prepared due to their business model and computer system. However, he also pointed out that when a store becomes available, they recruit candidates nationwide, so training in a specific district doesn't guarantee a store there. He avoided discussing average store revenue, claiming it's not how they measure success. It seems like a good starting point for new graduates, but for experienced individuals, it might mean a pay cut and starting from scratch. He kept emphasizing how special and superior their company is, which is why the training takes so long. With 30 years in management, I believe 6 months should be ample training time. I suspect they primarily need basic staff and extra hands for operational needs.

I first connected with them at a career fair where they really pushed their company and benefits. It was a good vibe with two recruiters and a district manager. They did an info session the night before and then interviewed me the next morning. All three people interviewed me and asked some challenging questions about why I wanted to join Tires Plus instead of other places. Then, they handed me two pens and asked me to market and sell them after a few minutes. They were nice, but they were tough and stayed consistent with their questions.

I applied online and got a call back in about a week. I then had a quick interview at the shop with the manager. Everything seemed good, but then he mentioned I'd have to work every weekend, no exceptions. That's why I ended up turning down the job offer; it wasn't worth it to me to never be able to go to a weekend event again.
