I got an initial message from a recruiter on LinkedIn, but they followed up saying the role was on hold. About a month later, I got referred internally and was contacted by a different recruiter. I had a quick, casual chat with the recruiter, then another with the head of product design. The in-person interview was at Tinder's office. I spoke with the product design lead, three designers, and a product manager, though several of them were new hires. Each chat was short (30 minutes) and pretty unstructured. One person asked about my UX process and how I'd redesign a Tinder feature, but we ran out of time. Most interviewers asked how I would change or redesign something about Tinder, rather than asking about my past projects or process.

A recruiter got back to me about a month after I applied. The recruiter call was pretty chill and honest. Then I spoke with the hiring manager, which was pretty direct, but their questions felt like a script, you know, like "what brands do you like?" They didn't ask about my portfolio, my thought process, or what I'd do differently for Tinder. The next week, they sent me a design test to create a modal for a new live matching feature at events. I whipped up some comps and a Framer prototype. Two days later, they let me know they were moving on with other candidates for the on-site interviews.
