First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tilt.
Senior Software Engineer
It started with a recruiter screen, then a discussion with the manager about past projects I've done. After that, there was a tech screen with some engineers. The final round was with the CTO, and it included behavioral questions about my previous projects, as well as some code refactoring and bug finding.

Site Reliability Engineer
Started with a recruiter call covering general questions. Then, a call with the engineering manager focused on technical experience and some culture fit. Next was a take-home technical challenge, involving building a simple web service. It was meant to check practical skills, allowing AI use and having reasonable time limits. I enjoyed this part and finished it in good time, though I had to make several trade-offs. Following that, there was a technical interview with two team members to go over the take-home project and discuss other technical topics. The final interview was with the CTO/co-founder. The overall process felt right in terms of time commitment and the questions were sensible. However, I got the impression they didn't actually review my take-home code, which led to spending a lot of time explaining my work. After a three-week wait, I was rejected without any feedback. I believe candidates deserve to know why they weren't a good fit, so I can't recommend this employer. This lack of basic respect might point to bigger issues.
- How do you manage competing work priorities?
Accountant
The interview process felt like a waste of time because many of their positions have been open for months, suggesting they aren't actually hiring. It seems like they might be posting jobs just to create an illusion of growth after a rebranding that led to negative reviews. The accounting interview itself was pretty standard, though the HR person was a bit cold and very direct with questions, not really engaging in conversation. It was a boring 'tell me about yourself' and 'when you have solved a problem' type of interview.
- Could you introduce yourself and explain what you're seeking in a new position?
Data Scientist
Got a call from Empower Finance within 24 hours of applying. The recruiter was super enthusiastic and wanted to move fast, scheduling me with the hiring manager right away. After talking to the hiring manager though, it all went quiet. I emailed the recruiter, but got no response, no feedback, not even a rejection. I was ghosted. It's really unprofessional when a company you pursued so eagerly can't even give you the courtesy of a response. Fintech is a small industry, and ghosting candidates you reached out to reflects badly on the company. It’s disrespectful and leaves a terrible impression. Think twice before dealing with Empower Finance. If they lack integrity in hiring, they probably lack it elsewhere too.
- Can you discuss your strategies for deploying models?
