Had two interviews, a phone screen and then a Google Hangout with Hiring Managers. The TA team was professional with scheduling and the initial screen. The Google Hangout didn't go well, expected 2 HMs, but only 1 showed up. The other HM had a DMV appointment. Neither HM had a Data Science background, so I offered my help. Got rejection emails 10 minutes after the call. The first email said they went with other candidates, but I was told I was the only one so far. The second email excused it by saying I had *some* skills, which with my 23 years of experience I found odd, especially as I was specific in my answers. Finally, got a call from TA about cultural fit and teamwork. This whole process felt inhuman, no real consideration for my PhD in Mathematics or my maturity. What even was this interview?

They posted an ad looking for '8 years of development experience'. They had a non-technical person doing the 'phone screens' for IT resumes, and this person seemed to have no idea what I was talking about. It felt like a generic admin just 'scanning' for 'key words'. I offered to let them check my Github, website, and LinkedIn, but the person didn't know what 'github' was. They just emailed me back saying 'We need somebody with more hands-on development experience', even though I have 22 years of hands-on development experience. I don't recommend applying here if you're a veteran software programmer, especially if they're going to insult someone with a quarter-century in the industry. If they're letting someone clueless about IT screen IT resumes, they're definitely missing out on qualified people. Very unprofessional.

Behavioral Technical Presentation

I had a phone screen, then an in-person interview with the team lead and some senior folks. Since I'm local, it was in person, but they'd probably do video chat or fly me in if I wasn't. The CSE role needs good soft skills for managing expectations and a broad technical background, not super deep like pure Eng. Being able to talk about my open-source and freelance work was a big help. No coding interview, but I shared my GitHub and references, which probably confirmed my technical background.

The whole interview process lasted about a month. First, there was a 30-minute phone call with the recruiter. Then, I had a 1-hour video interview with the accounting manager, which also included an accounting assessment. Finally, I had two back-to-back 30-minute video calls with the other two team members. The recruiter was really good at keeping me updated, and the team seemed nice.
