Thiess Interview Questions
& Process

I was part of the Thiess graduate program in Indonesia for 2022. The whole interview process happened online, and I conducted the entire interview in English. The interviewer was very nice and polite. You get to the interview stage after passing the initial psychological test during recruitment.

The interview process happens in Perth and Brisbane. First, we had an online meeting with the Brisbane head office, kind of like a briefing. There were about 20 of us, all civil background grads from Perth and Brisbane, but they probably only have one spot. After the online meeting, we were called in one by one for a group interview in another room. A senior project manager and an HR manager asked questions and took notes. Outside the room, two HR staff chatted with the rest of the applicants about casual stuff. It seems like keywords are really important when you answer.

After I sent my resume, it took over a month for them to get back to me. Then, about a month later, they called me for a phone interview. This role was for their coal seam gas site in Mackay. The responsibilities included optimizing coal circuits to meet plant simulated recoveries, meeting production forecasts and requirements (including quality specs), working with the senior process engineer to troubleshoot yield discrepancies, pursuing and implementing technological advances in coal preparation, liaising with other departments under the Senior Process Engineer's direction to maximize throughput and yield for the right product quality, and directing the day-to-day management of product stockpiles according to the long-term plan set by the senior process engineer to meet shipping parcels.

The interview process was pretty intense, and I managed to get through all the rounds up to the final one. Right after the last interview, I had a feeling I didn't get the job because the hiring manager seemed completely uninterested the entire time, even doodling on his notepad. The comms manager, on the other hand, was really nice and engaged. A few days later, I got a reference check, and my references confirmed they were contacted, which made me think maybe I did better than I initially felt. But then, I never heard back from them, and they didn't respond to my emails or calls about the job status. It wasn't until a month later that the applicant portal updated to show my application was unsuccessful. I didn't even get a basic automated email, a general email, or a phone call. It was quite disappointing that they couldn't just let me know about not getting the position or if it wasn't going to be filled.
