Technical Liaison
I've been with Thermotron Industries in Holland, Michigan, since February, and I'm a 21-year veteran. My first interview with Alan and Tamara went well, lasting about two hours. They seemed really interested in my HVAC and leadership experience. After that, I had to complete a long application covering my whole career from boot camp to 2022 and give three good references, including an active Navy Captain. My references were checked, and the owner, Brian, got my application but didn't look at it for a week. When Brian finally called, he didn't even talk about the job I applied for. He mostly asked about my military time and some random stuff about a Marine buddy of his. Then he tried to offer me a recruiter job in HR, which wasn't what I interviewed for. I asked for a day to consider it and called back the next day, but he said he was in a meeting and would call me back – he never did. After I tried to reach him a few times, he seemed to have forgotten our earlier talks and kept making excuses. It's obvious the owner isn't up-to-date with how hiring works these days. The phone interview was full of buzzwords instead of actually talking about the job I wanted. It's now April, and even though I followed up, I found out the owner makes the final hiring decision, making my time and qualifications seem pointless. This whole thing has been super frustrating and disappointing. Veterans, be warned: Thermotron might not value your time and skills. This whole process has been a huge waste of time and effort, and I wouldn't suggest applying here. It's clear they lack professionalism and don't respect candidates, and I hope others don't have the same bad experience.
- You didn't discuss the job I applied for at all when you called. Instead, you focused on my military background and asked unrelated questions, plus talked about a friend of yours in the Marines. You then poorly pitched me a recruiter role in HR, which was not what I applied for. I asked for a night to think about it and called back the next day, but you claimed you were in a meeting on two separate occasions!
Manager
The interview process was very thorough and allowed plenty of time to ask questions so I could learn more about the company and culture. The hiring manager was very open and transparent about the company and their performance expectations. They spent time getting to know me as a person too.
- Can you tell me about a project that you were really excited about? What was it and what was your role?
Field Service Sales
They asked me about past sales success. It was like a 'tell me about yourself' kind of thing. You know, that question that sounds easy but trips a lot of people up. You gotta pick what to say and what not to say, and how much personal stuff to share. Don't just go through your whole life story, but highlight your strengths and skills that fit the job.
- Tell me about yourself.
- What's your approach when a customer is hesitant to finalize a sale?
- What prompted your departure from your previous role?
Customer Support Field Service Representative
The interview process might involve some psychological tactics to assess how candidates handle pressure or manipulation. They'll ask standard questions like your strengths, weaknesses, career goals, ideal company, what attracted you to them, why they should hire you, what you liked least about your last job, when you were most satisfied, what makes you unique, responsibilities in your last role, why you're leaving, and your knowledge of the industry and company. They may also ask if you're willing to relocate.
- Have you ever been terminated or asked to resign?
- What's the hardest issue you encounter with management?
