Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Salvation Army.
Program Coordinator
The interview process was really friendly and positive. The people I met were nice and genuinely interested in listening and answering any questions I had. It didn't feel intimidating at all, and it seemed like everyone was acting in good faith. There were quite a few of us candidates, but they made sure to keep us updated on what was going on, and they were very kind and helpful throughout the whole thing.
- Could you start by telling us a bit about yourself?
Coordinator
After applying online, I was invited for a panel interview about a month later. The interview panel included the department head, the HR manager, and the division leader. This is an old nonprofit with an evangelical Christian background. It's important to understand their organizational structure and whether it aligns with your personal beliefs. While they cannot legally discriminate based on religion, sharing their beliefs may be beneficial. Employees not directly part of the SA corps are positioned near the bottom of the organizational hierarchy, just above volunteers. The organization operates like a pseudo-military structure where rank is significant. Division leaders are rotated every few years, and it's common for married couples to work within the same division, which can be awkward for other employees. The people are friendly, but they seem to be quite traditional. If you're not part of the SA corps, advancement opportunities are limited, and the salary is low, though the benefits are decent.
- Can you tell me about your past experience and what you know about The Salvation Army?
Facility Coordinator
I filled out a long application first. It had questions about situations that staff have faced. I answered them on paper and then in person. Three main administrators interviewed me and asked questions to check my common sense and honesty. There were also other usual tests, and then a background check. The whole thing took about 4-6 weeks.
- Describe how you would manage yourself in common scenarios with homeless individuals.
- Describe how you would manage yourself in common scenarios with residents.
- Describe how you would manage yourself in common scenarios with colleagues.
