Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The RealReal.
Software Engineer Intern
The interview process focuses on understanding how you think and solve problems, your grasp of computer science basics, and your ability to clearly explain your solutions. They also want to see your drive and eagerness to learn. Topics covered include data structures like arrays, linked lists, trees, and graphs, as well as stacks, queues, heaps, hash tables, and sets. Object-oriented design is also part of it.
- Looking back, would you tackle things differently now?
Software Engineer
After applying, I got a Hackerrank Online Assessment a few days later. The assessment included Leetcode easy-medium questions. This was followed by 4 interview rounds, each lasting an hour. The first two rounds were technical interviews, starting with a 10-15 minute behavioral chat before moving to coding questions, which were Leetcode easy to medium difficulty. Another interview focused mostly on behavioral questions or discussions about my experience and projects. The final round covered system design and culture fit.
- Can you tell me why you are interested in working at the realreal?
- Could you provide very detailed information about your past projects?
- Tell me about your experience, particularly regarding scalability.
Software Engineer
I had a coding screen with 2 engineers. Then, an onsite interview that included 2 technical interviews with engineers, 2 cultural talks with a QA and a PM, and an in-depth discussion about my experiences with the engineering manager. The team seemed nice, but the recruiting process was quite unprofessional. The recruiter missed scheduled calls multiple times and tried to pressure me into making a decision on the day they offered me the role. When I asked for more than one day to decide, they rescinded the offer. A month later, they reached out again saying the offer was still available. When I asked for more details, they stopped replying to emails. It made it hard to want to work there.
- A practical coding question that wasn't LeetCode style was asked.
