First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights & The Leadership Conference Education Fund.
Field Manager
This was a really weird and disappointing interview process. It took 3 months after applying to even get the first interview. The interviewer didn't seem to know how long the job had been posted, or maybe they were just lying because they said it was only posted a few weeks ago. They didn't seem to get what the job would actually involve, and their questions were vague and didn't tell me much about the role itself. At the end, they said they'd let me know by the end of the week, but it's been 3 months now.
- Can you tell me about your field experience?
Social Media Associate
First, I interviewed with recruitment & development. That interviewer was nice and professional. They were ready for the interview and asked relevant job questions. But then during the second interview with a different team member, the company showed a toxic side. The interviewer was rude, unprofessional, and disrespectful. They didn't have a good demeanor and asked me questions about how I would handle disrespect at work, which is a red flag. They seemed more interested in my personality than my ability to do the job. The interviewer also asked job experience questions that were totally unrelated to the role. They interrupted me a lot and picked apart my resume. The whole process was bad because of that one person. Also, they might have a problem if you have a part-time job on the side, even if you need it to survive. It's really disappointing to get this experience from an organization that's supposed to fight for everyone.
- How would you handle a situation where someone was disrespectful to you in a message and you then had to speak with them on a call?
Intern
Submitted an application with a cover letter, resume, and writing sample. Had one 20-minute phone interview with standard questions. They didn't really engage with the answers, seeming to stick to a rigid structure to avoid bias. It was still a nice chat though. The process itself isn't complex, but the huge number of applicants makes it really hard to get picked.
- What draws you to The Leadership Conference?
Communications Associate
So I applied online and then after a couple weeks, the department head gave me a call for a phone screen. Then I had to do a writing test, and after that, I interviewed with four team members and the department head again. That interview was kinda chill but also detailed, so it’s good to have answers ready for anything. I was kinda nervous at first, but they made me feel more comfortable, so just showing your passion is key. About a week after that, I had my final interview with a couple of department heads. They asked regular questions and also some random ones. For this one, you gotta be super confident, I got thrown off by their serious faces and didn't start off great. Make sure you bring your A-game, even if they seem uninterested, just keep talking about yourself. After the last interview, they asked for references, and they were contacted via email. I made sure to ask about timelines at each step, and when I didn't hear back when they said, I assumed I didn't get it. I did send a follow-up email, but it was never answered. Good luck!! Yeah, and definitely review your writing test before the final interview because they asked me about my process and I wasn't super clear since it had been a while.
