First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Greenlining Institute.
Fellow
The fellowship interview process had several rounds, usually 2 to 3. It started with an interview with the academy team, followed by another with the policy team. There might have also been an initial screening call with the direct supervisor, done one-on-one.
- Can you share your personal story and explain your motivation for pursuing policy?
- What led you to choose a career in policy?
Development Program Manager
I had a first round phone interview. They asked straightforward behavioral questions and about my background. They said they'd reach out in 2 weeks, but I didn't hear back, so I followed up and found out they chose another candidate.
- Can you tell me about yourself?
- How do you approach learning about new subjects, like economic equity?
Human Resources Director
It was very disorganized and ultimately, disrespectful as they never had the courtesy to inform me that I was not successful. Firstly, I received a call and I was asked if I was still interested and to go for an interview in person with a panel in 2 days. I agreed although it seemed very rushed - no process. Then I get a call back as the initial salary they advertised was incorrect so they wanted to let me know that it was lower and whether I was still interested. Already a bad sign. Then I went to the interview that had about 6 people in person plus a few others on speaker phones - connection was very bad at times. The interview was not bad except for a couple of inappropriate questions and a hint that some people had experienced micro aggressions. Overall, they were in very much of a need of a HR director as their internal process re: hiring was highly disorganized. After all my accommodating and being responsive, I did not receive that in return even though I was supposed to hear back - even if via email- after a few days. Very disappointing. I am glad they have a HR director now as the organization seems to have a good mission.
- They probed whether I would be reliable as I have a small child.
Summer Associate
It was a panel interview, and they asked about my interest in the policy area and why I want to be in the cohort. Some questions were specific to policy, but many were about personality, fit, and the cohort itself.
- What is it about the cohort model that appeals to you?
- How do you define or approach continuous learning?
- What makes you want to join this particular cohort?
