First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The Davey Tree Expert Company.
Consulting Utility Forester
It was pretty simple. In and out. They seemed more worried about filling quota. It was a phone call interview only. I applied, got screened by phone, and was later offered the position after they originally said I would have an in person interview.
- Can you hike long distances without cell service?
Arborist Trainee
I applied, and then an HR person reached out to me for an interview. I went in to meet with the local branch managers. It felt like it went really well, with one of the managers complimenting my resume. However, I never ended up getting an offer for that role or any other position.
- Can you tell me about your career aspirations?
Operations Manager
After a typical back and forth, I was quickly rejected. The reason given was a lack of passion for sales and business development. This was unexpected as I didn't think that was the main focus of the operations management role I applied for. It left a bad impression because I feel that's not accurate, and I actually managed a large sales territory for 5 years and enjoy sales. I thought they might consider me for nearby sales roles, but it seemed short-sighted to dismiss someone who could be an asset now or in the future, potentially even a competitor. I'm now less inclined to apply for other positions with them.

Consulting Utility Forester
The process was painful and incompetent. I didn't make it past the recruiter who was in Orlando. I told her to call me at any time except time A, but she called me at time A. She then immediately said I wouldn't be a good fit because I'm not a climber. This is not a climbing position; it's about managing climbers. I manage climbers now. Just incompetent. I'm giving a neutral rating because the actual company might be okay.
- Even though climbing isn't mentioned in the job description, do you climb?
