First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The College of New Jersey.
Community Advisor
First, we had to submit an application, followed by writing essays on our leadership background, our thoughts on diversity topics, and our motivations/qualifications for the role. Three recommendations were also required. If selected, we were invited to the interview days, which involved a few hours of group activities designed to assess performance under pressure, prioritization skills, and group dynamics. This was followed by a two-on-one interview with current Community Advisors and a one-on-one with a Residence Director. Acceptance or rejection notifications were sent out a couple of weeks later. Overall, it was a demanding but effective process for identifying suitable candidates.
- Tell me about a time you faced an ethical dilemma with friends or coworkers and how you resolved it.
Support Specialist
So the interview process was alright, but it could have been better. They should tell you who you're meeting and how the interview will go, like if it's a panel or one-on-one. I asked during the first phone call and they just ignored me, so I didn't bother asking again for the in-person one. Usually, I give candidates an interview schedule so they know what to expect and it feels more professional. Also, I waited in the lobby for like 15 minutes after my interview was supposed to start. Super unprofessional and a waste of my time. While I was waiting, I could hear them figuring out who would ask what. It felt like they were just going through the motions instead of being welcoming. The whole interview was just behavioral questions. Those can be good, but only using them made it feel really stiff and we didn't really get to chat naturally about the job or the company.
- Can you share an instance where you needed to be adaptable?
Manager
The interview process was pretty standard. First, there was a group interview over the phone with three interviewers. After that, I proceeded to the second round, which was a lengthy four-hour session that included two group interviews and two individual ones. I didn't get any news about the final decision until three weeks after that.
- Tell me about a time you faced a specific situation.
- How do you feel about the company's mission?
Front of House Manager
It was a sit-down interview, quite personal. We talked about work and life experiences. They were looking for people who were good with money and stress, but also really good with people. It's important not to show nervousness because they need individuals who aren't afraid to stand up and assert themselves.
- Can you tell me about your experience collecting money?
