I first chatted with HR over the phone, and then had to complete a writing assignment. Following that, I had an in-person interview with the hiring manager, and then got the job offer in less than a day!

This was one of the worst phone interviews I've ever had. The HR person didn't seem to know how to interview. She asked about my salary range, and I said I was looking for the upper end of what they advertised. She then got upset and said I was taking money from veterans. I asked her to clarify the range, she did, and I repeated I wanted the upper end. She calmed down but told me I should be there to serve, not to earn a living wage in an expensive city. After that, I decided to focus on the private sector. I'm not asking for a lot, but if you advertise $72k-$78k and I ask for $75k, I shouldn't be yelled at.

It was actually through a temp agency, but it wasn't anything too serious. They just asked some basic questions, the kind you'd expect from any temp agency, to get a feel for your background. And of course, you have to pass a drug test with most temp agencies before they can place you with a company.

The interview process was really straightforward and brief. It felt pretty standard, and they seemed eager to fill the role quickly. There was only one interview, and then they extended a job offer. I didn't accept because they couldn't accommodate my out-of-state Reserves military obligation, expecting me to use PTO for drill, which is ironic given their mission.
