First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at The ALS Group.
Marketing Coordinator
The hiring process was really long, it involved about 4-5 stages including a personality test. After leading me on for a month, they rejected me for reasons I had already disclosed in the first call. It was a very poor experience.
- What are your expectations for this role?
Analyst
The interview wasn't too bad. The people were friendly, but I got a weird vibe about the company during my visit. It seemed like most of the employees hadn't been there for long, suggesting a high turnover rate. Because of this, I turned down the job offer.
- What specific skills do you possess that would benefit our company?
Administrative Assistant
Parking is available in a garage, so allow extra time to find a spot and walk a few blocks to reception. Take the elevator up to the office. The building and office seemed nice, but I only got a few steps inside before a staff member led me to a small meeting room near the entrance. The interviewer explained the role involves making travel arrangements, running reports, using MS Office (Word, Excel), and creating PowerPoint presentations – typical tasks for the financial services industry. She quickly described the work environment and the CEO's personality. It was implied that overtime outside of normal hours might be expected, but this seemed acceptable given the generous salary and benefits. I asked a few questions, and we were about to finish when she asked if I'd heard of Glassdoor. I had, but I hadn't checked this employer there before my interview. She mentioned an admin set up an account without company approval, got fired, and then left negative reviews. I figure most reviews will have some negative feedback. After I got home, I sent my usual thank you note and did more research on the company now that I had some names. Out of curiosity, I checked Glassdoor reviews and it seems like people are either very happy or very unhappy there. You can form your own opinion by looking at press releases and LinkedIn profiles.
- Can you tell me why you left your previous position?
- Are you familiar with Glassdoor?
Vice President, Risk Management
It started with a great phone interview where the owner reached out to me. Then I was asked to visit the Corporate offices in NJ, expecting expense reimbursement which didn't happen. The interview started quite late without much of an apology. The questions felt judgmental, and then came a 'personality' test and an NDA. After signing the NDA, which I assumed would allow me to ask questions about the company's solvency and longevity, I wasn't given that chance. The personality test was a joke, and I wasn't even given a copy of my results. I also didn't get a courtesy call to know if I was a good fit or if they found someone else. This lack of courtesy is unusual, especially for the level I applied for. I imagine working there would be stressful and disrespectful, given the owner's arrogant and egotistical demeanor. I'm passing on this opportunity.
