First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Texas Department of Public Safety.
Customer Service Representative
I applied and got an interview letter about two weeks later, asking for my hire and salary package. They also sent a background check form, which is 35 pages long and asks for work, personal, school, and criminal history. I'm waiting to hear back about the background check, which also included fingerprinting.
- How do you handle a customer who doesn't understand the concept?
Customer Service Representative
It was a panel interview with three interviewers. They asked questions that were two-part: first, a definition of a word, and second, why it's important for the position. I had the interview one day and got the decision the next day. I had a feeling they had already picked someone for the job and just had to interview me. Even though I have over 10 years of DL experience in Oklahoma with no complaints, they picked someone with more skills and experience. I suspect it was someone's friend, cousin, or sister who needed a job.
- Can you define integrity?
- What action should be taken if a customer offers a gratuity for good work?
- What are your reasons for us to hire you?
Customer Service Representative
I applied online July 10th and heard back July 16th about an in-person interview scheduled for July 30th. Then, on August 1st, I got another email saying I wasn't selected. The interview started with a physical test where I had to lift a box that was supposed to be 50 pounds but felt lighter, around 20 pounds. It was a 3-person panel interview, as I expected from my research. One supervisor from another DPS office was reading questions really fast, so I had to ask her to repeat them twice because she seemed rushed. Another person, a young lead, didn't even look at me and seemed uninterested, maybe bored. The only person who seemed engaged was the actual supervisor for the team. The whole experience wasn't great; it felt like they were just going through the motions. Each person asked three questions, which were pretty straightforward and not nerve-wracking. It was actually a relief after it was over, as I don't think it would have been a good fit long-term given the interviewers' attitudes.
- Can you tell me about a situation where you had to handle a difficult customer and what you did?
- What would you prioritize if a customer was in front of you and the phone started ringing?
