Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at TELUS.
Manager
It was a 5-interview process in total. Started with a screening call with HR, then went on to 4 more interviews with 3 directors and 1 VP. The entire thing took about 4 months. Two of the interviewers had their cameras off because they didn't work, which was weird for a tech company. It felt uncomfortable being interviewed by someone I couldn't see. The questions were pretty standard. I made it to the shortlist with 2 other candidates, but one of them ended up getting the job.
- Would you be open to attending online meetings very early in the morning to accommodate colleagues in different time zones?
Team Manager
First, I had an initial call with a recruiter. Then, I interviewed with both the reporting manager and the recruiter. It was a standard interview with questions about my experience, and I was asked to provide examples of how I handled various situations. The interview lasted about 30 minutes and felt pretty relaxed and friendly.
- Can you describe your skills and weaknesses?
- Could you share some examples of situations you've handled?
Pricing Manager
So I had a recruiter phone screen, then a chat with the hiring manager. The HM asked some really weird personal questions, said they work 12+ hours but not to expect that, and called the team a 'family.' They pressured me to schedule the next interview fast, giving only one slot. Then came a super tight deadline for a take-home case study, like 35+ hours of unpaid work in a weekend. The panel interview was supposed to be 15 mins but they cut me off at 8 mins. They didn't ask any questions after my presentation, which felt like a bad sign. I was asked some behavioral questions, but I was rushed because of the case study. Almost two weeks later, the HM said they went with internal candidates and offered feedback, but then ghosted me when I asked for it. Never applying to TELUS again.
- Can you introduce yourself?
- What's your reason for leaving your current job?
- How would you handle urgent tasks from four different managers if you had a tight deadline?
