First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Tekmetric.
QA Engineer
So I interviewed for a QA gig at Tekmetric and didn't get it, but wanted to share my experience because it was pretty cool. It started with HR, and it was super chill, not like an interrogation at all. They asked stuff like 'What do you know about Tekmetric?', 'How do you handle constructive criticism?', and 'Tell me about a recent book or show you watched.' They seemed more interested in if I'd fit in than just my skills. After that, I got a technical assignment to do over three days. You can actually find it online if you look, which is neat. I liked having a few days for it instead of a live coding thing. Then, the second interview was all about going over my assignment. They wanted to know my thought process, why I made certain choices, and my code reasoning. It felt more like a chat. Even though I didn't get the job, I really respect how they do hiring. It felt thought out and fair. I think it's a great company and would tell other QA folks to check them out.
- How do you deal with tests that are unreliable?
Software Engineer
The entire experience was great. Everyone was friendly, knowledgeable, and easy to talk to, making it feel comfortable and relaxed. The process was smooth, well-organized, and I always knew what to expect. They communicated consistently, never leaving me waiting or guessing. Before each stage, the hiring team would reach out to set expectations and help me prepare. It started with a recruiter screen (no coding involved), followed by an interview with the hiring manager (also no coding). Then, I completed a take-home coding assignment. After that, I had an in-person session for a code review of my assignment. Notably, there was no live coding! The final stage was a system design discussion where we used a graphing tool to talk about how systems are put together and their design principles.
- Tell me about the choices you made in your coding assignment and why you made them.
- Let's talk about system design; can you lead the conversation on how systems are structured and the principles behind their design?
Operations
The process was pretty standard. I met with a team member, then the recruiter reached out to move to the next stage. After meeting all team members, communication stopped. I reached out a few times and got no responses. Based on who has been hired since, I believe I wasn't hired because I'm male, as all current and new hires in that department are female. It's sad to see that kind of discrimination.
- How would you diagnose a request and convert it into technical requirements for the team?
Product Manager
I submitted my application online and had a referral. A recruiter from Tekmetric contacted me within a couple of days. After the initial recruiter chat, I was set up to speak with the hiring manager. The hiring manager mentioned he thought he'd reviewed my resume the prior day but didn't actually have it on hand. He didn't ask anything that showed he remembered anything from it. I didn't hear back for over a month after that meeting and wasn't moved forward in the process.
- The recruiter asked standard behavioral questions using the STAR method.
- The hiring manager asked some typical questions and a few unusual hypothetical ones, frequently cutting me off. For example, when I mentioned tracking MRR as part of a dashboard, he interrupted to confirm if I meant 'MRR?'. He then asked what metrics I'd include on a dashboard for an app I use regularly if I were CEO, what I'd change about that app and why, how I'd handle a drop in renewals or satisfaction, and then to describe how I'd build a competitor's app while still acting as the original app's CEO, and how I'd secure a CTO.
