As a current employee, I was given the first priority to apply for a promotion within our shop. However, I feel that that was a just a show, as they had no intentions of promoting me and a waste of my time.

I thought TechShop was innovative but the interview process felt like applying for an entry-level fast food job. They even took my picture! After applying online, an executive left a voicemail. I called back expecting a phone interview, but they set up an in-person interview, asking me to be flexible with their limited availability. The first interview was with two executives. I expected a professional discussion, but they mostly followed a single-page form. The questions were basic, like 'Do you own a car?' and 'How long will it take you to get to work?', similar to what you'd ask a teen. Then, I had to rate myself 1-5 on management skills like Customer Service, Team Building, and P&L Management. They seem to want 5s, or 4s with explanations, showing confidence. The last part involved rating technical skills like Woodworking and CNC, where they seemed to prefer lower ratings, suggesting they want a manager, not a shop worker. The first interview was straightforward if you knew what they wanted. One interviewer liked creative types, so mentioning theater experience could help. The second interview was more conversational, discussing my background with the interviewer, who used to be with Make Magazine.

My application went in online, and they reached out a few days later. I then went in for an in-person interview, and I got the job offer by the following Friday. My prior experience really helped me out.
